Blade of Vengeance or Chapter 9: Blade of Vengeance is the ninth "level", or chapter, of Soul Reaver 2. It opens with Raziel witnessing the death of Janos Audron in his retreat and follows Raziel as he pursues the Sarafan warrior inquisitors responsible for the act to the Sarafan Stronghold and confronts them.

Plot[edit | edit source]

Having completed the Fire Forge and gained the Fire Reaver in the previous chapter, Raziel used the new enhancement to open the sealed door barring his way into Janos's chambers. He arrived to find the Sarafan warrior inquisitors surrounding a fallen Janos Audron rendered helpless with the use of Moebius's Staff and was powerless to stop them as the lead inquisitor tore out Janos's heart.[SR2][SR2-C9]

As the inquisitor held the grisly trophy aloft, Raziel caught a clear sight of his face and realised that the lead inquisitor was his former human self, accompanied by his brothers Turel, Dumah, Zephon and Melchiah - a group Raziel had recently lionized and revered. As the two incarnations of Raziel locked eyes, a tremor shook the building and the Sarafan retreated taking the Reaver blade with them.[SR2][SR2-C9]

Raziel descended to Janos's body, finding the ancient vampire barely clinging to life. Janos reiterated his belief in Raziel and his willingness to die to have saved him. Encouraging Raziel to reclaim to Reaver, Janos revealed before he died that it was forged for Raziel alone. As Raziel backed away from Janos's corpse he rejected his previous beliefs and pledged to honour Janos, resolving to pursue the Sarafan to their stronghold, avenge Janos's murder, retake the Reaver and - recognising the supposed ability of the 'Heart of Darkness' to restore vampire unlife - Raziel finally sought to reclaim the Janos's heart, hoping to restore Janos himself. Raziel left the retreat by jumping from the balcony and Janos Audron's Retreat collapsed behind him.[SR2][SR2-C9]

As Raziel journeyed back through Nosgoth, he was confronted by various Demons who taunted him about his destiny. Recognising that they from centuries in the future, Raziel surmised that they were "minions of the unseen forces" that Kain had warned him about and their attempts to stop him were a signal of their "displeasure" at his actions.[SR2][SR2-C9]

As he made his way through the Subterranean Ruins, Raziel again confronted the Elder God in the Subterranean Pillars Chamber. This time with a tone of "ominous finality", the Elder simply lamented that Raziel had failed it, whereas Raziel asserted his independence, voicing his doubts that the Elder was responsible for his resurrection at all. After fighting his way back to the Sarafan Stronghold, Raziel was able to use the Fire Reaver on a Fire Plinth to melt the Ice on the surface of the Great Southern Lake and gain entry to the building.[SR2][SR2-C9]


Soon after, Raziel unexpectedly found the Reaver laid across his path in a small antechamber, but instead of the usual temporal distortion, Raziel felt only the "nameless dread" he had when Janos presented the blade to him. As he studied the blade he was interrupted by Moebius and Malek - with Moebius's Staff disabling the Wraith Blade. Cornered by the two, Raziel debated his destiny with Moebius before the unmistakeable voice of Vorador rang out, indicating the imminent Slaughter of the Circle. With Malek persuaded by Moebius to Raziel was a greater threat, they remained present until Raziel - devoid of any other weapons - grasped the Reaver, prompting Malek and Moebius to leave and bolt the exit on their way. Raziel soon realised that he had become bound to the blade, unable to let go of the Reaver or put it down, but with his strength sustained indefinitely - preventing him from taking damage or Shifting into the Spectral Realm.[SR2][SR2-C9]

Forced into another path through the stronghold away from the Circle's gathering-room and the slaughter taking place there, Raziel found that he was being channelled into facing the greatest threats of the Sarafan Order - the Sarafan warrior inquisitors. As he reached the Cloister he was confronted by Melchiah and Zephon. Quickly dispatching the two Raziel recognised that the Reaver had now made him virtually invincible, and privately he began to appreciate Kain's choice of lieutenants for his empire - realising that despite his initial outrage at the Tomb of the Sarafan, he had always been responsible for their deaths in the first place.[SR2][SR2-C9]

As he continued through the stronghold he was next ambushed by Rahab and Dumah in the Sanctuary area, and then by Turel in the chapel - each fell before the power of the blade - with Raziel taking particular pleasure at the death of Turel who had eluded his vengeance in the Soul Reaver era. Finally Raziel made his way to the Chapter House and a final confrontation with the human Sarafan Raziel.[SR2][SR2-C9]

Walkthrough[edit | edit source]

Janos Audron's Retreat[edit | edit source]

After dropping in the lake outside Janos Audron's Retreat it was necessary for Raziel to swim directly upward to the hole in the ice above him and climb out onto the frozen lake. Heading south, he could crouch-jump to the island with Sarafan banners and glide across to the island with the broken staircase, before gliding to the southern-most island and from there to the terrace at the edge of the lake. As he headed down the small staircase Raziel would be confronted by two Gas demons who erected Combat barriers and taunted him about his destiny. Defeating the two would drop the barriers and enable him to travel further south into the mountains.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]

Uschtenheim[edit | edit source]

As Raziel continued along the path another set of Demons would ambush him, with two Acid demons raising barriers and attacking - again requiring Raziel to defeat them to progress. Once he had dispatched the Acid demons Raziel could continue to follow the trail as it dropped down into a wide open area. Here he was again confronted by Demons that taunted him - this time by three Lightning Demons and their barriers. Attacking them with the Wraith Blade and using the powers of the Reaver bar allowed him to defeat them quickly, dropping the barriers and allowing him to re-imbue the Fire Reaver from the nearby Fire Reaver font if necessary. Climbing the western wall, Raziel could make his way along the passage to the entrance to Uschtenheim, fighting or evading a group of Sarafan warrior swordsmen and a sorceress along the way.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]

As Raziel entered Uschtenheim the village would be blocked of by Fire barriers and three Fire demons would spawn within in addition to the five Sarafan already present in the village. Generally the enemies would split into three groups, each with conflicting enemies, allowing Raziel to choose to attack with the wraith blade quickly or keep his distance and pick off the survivors (remaining wary that if he got to close all of the enemies would turn on him) - a Fire demon fought with a pikeman and a swordsman in the north, another fought two pikemen in the center near the church, while a third fought a swordsman to the south in front of the exit. Raziel could take cover within the small church and once the demons were defeated use the save altar there before re-imbuing the Fire Reaver at a font in front of the church and moving on to the south to use the lever to raise the gate and allow him to leave the hamlet.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]

In the next clearing four Sarafan warriors waited below a high ledge, but as soon as Raziel dropped down two fire demons would spawn and raise combat barriers. Again Raziel could choose to attack quickly with the wraith blade or return up the slope and wait for the demons and Sarafan to fight among themselves and pick off the weakened victor, this time he could use the overlook to his advantage and fire Reaver bolts at the enemies below. Once the demons were defeated, Raziel could progress to the platforms on the other side and jump up to face or evade a swordsman and a sorceress before moving onto the next clearing. At this overlook, Raziel would be confronted by a powerful Black demon, again using combat barriers and taunting him. Using Reaver bolts and dropping down and using the wraith blade against it, Raziel could defeat the demon and drop the barriers, allowing him to reach the passage to the swamp, again imbuing the Fire Reaver at the nearby font if necessary.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]

The Swamp[edit | edit source]


Dropping down and taking the southeast path, Raziel would be confronted by three Sarafan warriors as he passed a checkpoint. Confronting or evading them he could continue further south, passing another three Sarafan on his way to the save altar in the east of the swamp. As he embarked upon the watery areas of the swamp, Raziel could choose to imbue the Air Reaver at a nearby font to run through the water, or keep his Fire Reaver and jump across the islands - either way he would be confronted by another Sarafan as he left the clearing and four more as he moved around the turning to the northern gate. As he passed under the Dark forge balcony, another set of combat barriers would be raised leaving Raziel trapped with another taunting Black demon. After defeating it he could jump down the shaft inside the building in the south and reach the Subterranean Ruins.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]

The Subterranean Ruins[edit | edit source]

When he reached the bottom of the shaft Raziel would be confronted by a shade and, killing or evading it, he could continue heading southwest, dropping down to the Air plinth at the bottom of the cavern. Dealing with several more shades here, he could continue to the southwest following the stairs and crouch-jump up to a higher platform where he would encounter more shades, before descending to the cavern entrance where three more shades awaited.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]

As Raziel reached the statue room he found the water completely drained and a pair of Acid demons warped in to confront him. Killing or evading them, he could then proceed to the alcove in the northwestern wall where a air font was positioned and another pair of acid demons would warp in. Jumping to the alcove to imbue the Air Reaver and returning to the base of the statue to activate the Air plinth, Raziel could then glide up on the updraft created to reach a platform near the top of the statue and then use the climbing wall to reach the summit of the statue. From there he could jump to the north west to a platform jutting from the wall and follow it around the top of the chamber, jumping to the platform in the western corner then to the balcony along southwest wall and on to the platform in the south to re-imbue the Fire Reaver at the font, before jumping back to the balcony, jumping up the platform behind it and continuing up the climbing wall in the southeast of the room above. At the top Raziel would be confronted by several shades, but could easily dispatch or evade them and follow the path as it headed towards the southwest before winding down around a pool of water. Jumping in the water, Raziel could swim through the underwater tunnel westward to reach the Subterranean Pillars Chamber.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]

Swimming past the Elder God and surfacing to meet him, Raziel could soon visit the Save altar in the north of the room before continuing to the south and up the staircase, bypassing or dispatching several shades along the way. Following the passage as it headed north and westward, Raziel would be confronted by two acid demons at the bend in the trail and another two in the wider cavern area, each accompanied by several shades, however none was using demon barriers so it was possible to avoid them and head straight for the exit to reach the sealed door leading to the end of the Pillars area.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]

The Pillars[edit | edit source]

Once through the sealed door Raziel could head forward to the checkpoint where three shades would attack him, but they could be easily avoided or dispatched. Heading up the stepped path, he could follow the trail as it twisted back towards the pillars and dropped down into the Pillars clearing itself. As Raziel made his way across the clearing to the battlement doors, demon barriers would raise and he would be faced by three Black demons who taunted him. Using a combination of a charged wraith blade, long distance Reaver bolts and using the pillars for cover (if necessary using them in the same capacity to help him consume souls in the Spectral Realm), Raziel was able to defeat the demons and drop the barriers allowing him to progress through the battlement doors.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]

Proceeding through the doors Raziel would be confronted by a group of Sarafan warriors which he could dispatch or evade at will. Following the trail around towards the top of the Shrine area, another group would confront him before he reached the top of the bridge - which was yet to be built in this era (usage of a nearby air plinth was necessary to return to the pillars section). Dropping down, Raziel could follow the river south passing a checkpoint and another group of Sarafan, and down the waterfall to the Shrine construction where he would be confronted by two pikemen and a sorceress.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]

Defeating or evading them, Raziel could follow the trail and the river east as it led over a bridge away from the shrine - with another fire font positioned under the bridge if necessary. A group of Sarafan would ambush Raziel here and as he progressed further along and another set would attack at the bend in the trail. Continuing to head east, Raziel would soon reach a high overlook where he could drop down to the icy Great Southern Lake.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]

The top of the Shrine area

The Great Southern Lake[edit | edit source]

If Raziel did not possess the Fire Reaver at this point, then it was necessary for him to head east across the frozen lake to a Fire Reaver font on an outcrop on the southern bank, clearing various Sarafan troops along the way - including several sorceresses who would flee when damaged and shoot bolts from afar. Returning to the western bank and down the western trail Raziel could use the final save altar before returning to the lake and the dock entrance to the Sarafan stronghold. A Fire Plinth on the west bank allowed Raziel to melt a section of ice just in front of the door.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]

Once this way done, Raziel could cross the ice again to reach a light font on a platform on the northern bank, clearing the Sarafan along the way and crouch-jumping to reach it and imbue the Light Reaver. Armed with the Light Reaver and the nearby Sarafan dispatched, Raziel could shoot a Light Reaver bolt at the Light crystal atop the dock doorway, opening the doors and allowing him to swim inside the dock and enter the Sarafan Stronghold.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]

The Sarafan Stronghold[edit | edit source]

Swimming inside the stronghold dock, Raziel would immediately be attacked by four sorceresses firing bolts at him from either side of the dock. Climbing out to the western side, Raziel could dispatch those on this side if necessary, before following the passage in the southwest and defeating the two swordsmen waiting in the corridor and progressing through the doorway at the end of the passage. In the next small antechamber, Raziel would be confronted by two swordsmen and a sorceress and forced into combat as portcullises shut the exits, requiring him to defeat the enemies before moving on. Once Raziel had dispatched these foes the southern exit opened leading him down another corridor. With the southern corridor exit barred, Raziel was forced into the eastern door into a small antechamber where he was able to recover the Reaver after a confrontation with Moebius and Malek.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]

Exiting through the eastern door, Raziel found himself in the Cloister where the exits were shut and he was confronted by the first of the Sarafan warrior inquisitors - the Sarafan knights Melchiah and Zephon.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]

The early Cloister

Made virtually invincible by the Reaver, Raziel's health did not drain and he was unable to shift into the Spectral Realm or put down the blade, however the aggressive attacking and stout defending of the inquisitors still made the battle something of a challenge. To defeat them it was necessary to evade their lunging strikes and to block and counter - keeping them together so they could not attack from two sides. Once they were defeated Raziel could move on, heading through the corridor on the north wall to reach the Sanctuary cathedral area and an enclosed confrontation with the Sarafan knights Rahab and Dumah.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]

As before Raziel was impervious to harm , but the aggressive style of the inquisitors could still make this battle challenging, so it was best to block and counter their attacks until they had taken enough damage to be put down. After they were defeated Raziel could move north through the Sanctuary area into the raised gated choir where he would be faced with the inquisitor Turel.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]

With Turel facing Raziel unaccompanied, he represented a step up in terms of strength but lacked the opportunity to double team, and with Raziel made invincible by the Reaver, the same tactics as before would eventually pay dues and Turel would be dispatched. With Turel defeated the portcullis barring the southern door would rise, allowing Raziel to pass through the corridor and onto the Chapter House and his final battle.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]

Dark Chronicle: The Death of Janos Audron[edit | edit source]

[Having imbued the Reaver with the elemental power of fire, Raziel is finally able to unlock the sealed door that separates him from Janos and his assassins. Raziel rushes through the door as it slowly slides open, and races toward Janos's chamber like an avenging angel.
The Sarafan are clustered around Janos's prostrate body, having rendered him helpless with the aid of Moebius's staff. They've pinned the ancient vampire on his back. As Janos struggles against his captors, the head inquisitor commands his fellow Sarafan –]
Sarafan Raziel: Hold him!
[Savoring the moment, the inquisitor raises his cruel-looking blade – then bringing it down violently, he tears Janos's chest open.]
Janos Audron: (screams in agony)
[Raziel reaches the threshold of the chamber too late. He watches in horror as the inquisitor reaches into Janos's open chest cavity and rips out his living heart with his hand, raising it triumphantly for the other Sarafan to see –]
Turel: Look at his black heart, how it still beats!
[Raziel prepares to leap into the fray, and then is frozen – as the head inquisitor turns, raising the heart, Raziel gets a good look at his face. And realizes that he has just watched himself – his former, Sarafan self – murder Janos.
The two incarnations of Raziel lock eyes on each other – blue Raziel gaping in horror at recognizing his former self, and Sarafan Raziel strangely haunted by something in this demonic figure, but not knowing what.
As Janos begins to die, a tremor shakes the Retreat. The chamber rocks with the impact, and begins to collapse under the strain.]
Dumah: (alarmed)
The fiend intends to bury us alive!
(Then, trying to snap their leader out of his trance –)
Raziel, we must get out of here!
[Sarafan-Raziel cannot tear his eyes from this demonic apparition. With his gaze still locked on this Raziel, he commands his fellow Sarafan –]
Sarafan Raziel: Remember the sword!
[Dumah grabs up the Reaver. With Moebius's staff still in Turel's possession and Janos's heart still in Raziel's, the Sarafan rush out of the chamber just as the entire Retreat threatens to collapse around them.
Heedless of the retreating Sarafan, Raziel leaps down to where Janos lies dying. Incredibly, the ancient vampire is still alive, but only barely. Raziel kneels disconsolately beside him and gently cradles Janos's head – bereft at the loss of his new-found mentor, and horrified at this latest epiphany: that he himself was Janos's murderer.]
Raziel: Forgive me; I'm sorry... I failed you.
Janos Audron: (gently)
No, Raziel.
Perhaps this was my true purpose – simply to save your life this once.
Raziel: (distraught)
While I have taken yours...
Janos Audron: (dying)
Embrace your destiny, Raziel...
You must reclaim the Reaver – it was forged for you and you alone...
Without it, there is no hope...
[Janos dies, and the Retreat is rocked again by a massive tremor. The chamber's vaults collapse as their support beams crumble, and the exits are filled by cascading rubble until the chamber is completely sealed off.
Oblivious to the devastation around him, Raziel stays by the corpse of his would-be mentor.
As the tremors begin to subside, Raziel rises and steps slowly away from Janos's corpse, destroyed by these new revelations, and nursing a growing ember of hatred.]
Raziel (V.O.): (disgusted; resolute)
As I backed away from Janos's body, I was overwhelmed by a sense of self-loathing so deep, I could barely contain it.
In that instant, I rejected all that I ever was, and embraced the role Janos had safeguarded for me so patiently throughout the centuries. I knew then what I had to do – the task for which I was uniquely prepared...
(Walking slowly to the edge of the balcony, Raziel gazes out at Nosgoth's landscape.)
I would pursue the Sarafan dogs to their loathsome fortress, and avenge Janos Audron's murder.
Moebius would pay dearly for his treachery, and my Sarafan brethren would reap the horrors they had sown.
I would retake the stolen Reaver, which was rightfully mine.
And finally, when all these debts had been paid, I would reclaim Janos Audron's heart from their filthy, unworthy hands.
If the heart was truly imbued with the power to restore vampiric unlife, its highest purpose was clear to me...
I would restore the heart to Janos, and thus undo the vile crime committed by my abominable former self.
[As Raziel stands on the balcony, the canyon is shaken by a final massive tremor. He leaps clear of the tumbling wreckage just before the vaults of Janos's chamber collapse completely.]

Dialogue: Janos Audron's Retreat[edit | edit source]

[Raziel is trapped between two energy barriers. Two gas demons teleport in and drop down before Raziel.]
Gas Demon: We have been expecting you, little Raziel.
Raziel (V.O.): So, these demonic pests were not merely the product of Nosgoth's corrupted future – for here they were, hurdling back over five centuries to pursue me. These creatures, I suspected, were minions of the unseen forces that had hoped to control me. This was the tangible expression of their displeasure – these demons were unleashed as the penalty for my disobedience.

Dialogue: Uschtenheim[edit | edit source]

[Raziel's path is once again blocked by energy barriers. Two grey demons teleport in and drop down right beside Raziel.]
Lightning Demon 1: Do you really think you can save Nosgoth?
Lightning Demon 2: Let me enlighten you, poor Raziel...
[As Raziel passes through Uschtenheim, fire barriers seal off the town.]
Fire Demon: There he is, the 'savior of Nosgoth'.

Dialogue: The Swamp[edit | edit source]

[More fire barriers seal Raziel within a passage through the canyons, and a huge black demon rises from the ground.]
Black Demon: Come closer, Raziel.
[Another black demon rises from the muck as Raziel passes through the swamp.]
Black Demon: You shall not pass!

Dark Chronicle: The Final Transgression[edit | edit source]

[Having renounced his Sarafan heritage, Raziel trails his former brethren back to the Stronghold to avenge Janos Audron's murder. In the course of his pursuit, Raziel visits the subterranean Pillars chamber for the last time.
The Elder God greets him with ominous finality –]
Elder God: You have failed me, Raziel.
Raziel: I wonder, Old One...
Did you truly resurrect me, or were you simply there when I awakened from my torment in the Abyss?
I suspect you found me merely convenient. Dropped in your lair by Kain, indestructible for some reason. A durable and gullible tool for you to manipulate.
This one thing I readily admit – I have been used by others time and again. But always I seem to stray from their path... what is it about me, Demon, that makes me such an unreliable instrument?
Why do I survive one trial after another... on and on in an endless succession of humiliating deaths and resurrections?
It seems there is much more to my destiny, and my history, than I know.
Perhaps more than you know, as well...

Dialogue: The Pillars of Nosgoth[edit | edit source]

[As Raziel runs past the Pillars, and numerous corpses of the Sarafan's vampire victims, three black demons rise from the ground to surround him.]
Black Demon 1: He thinks he can change his destiny.
Black Demon 2: What a fool.

Dark Chronicle: Cornered in the Stronghold[edit | edit source]

[Raziel has pursued the Sarafan to their Stronghold, resolved to avenge Janos Audron's murder, recover his heart, and reclaim the stolen Reaver.
Charging through the Stronghold's corridors, Raziel finds himself at a dead end, in an antechamber off the cloister. The Reaver is here, laid out across a basin in the center of the room – as if propped here for Raziel to discover.
Raziel stops short – for here is the blade that stirred such unsettling premonitions when Janos presented it to him. As before, he feels no distortion in its presence, which troubles him – he is repelled and afraid, yet irresistibly drawn toward the sword.]
Raziel (V.O.): Suddenly and inexplicably, I discovered the Reaver, suspiciously laid across my path.
Again, I sensed nothing of that 'temporal distortion', the peculiar sense of displacement I had felt when I encountered the Reaver in William's chapel.
Cornered here with the blade, I suffered the same nameless dread that I had experienced when Janos first presented the Reaver to me.
I felt at once repelled by the blade, and yet overwhelmingly compelled to seize it.
[Suddenly Moebius and the Sarafan Malek appear in the doorway behind Raziel, cutting off his exit. He's been ambushed.
Wheeling on them, Raziel summons the wraith-blade – but Moebius has arrived bearing his staff, and as the orb flares, the wraith-blade flickers and dies.
Moebius's demeanor has changed dramatically since their last encounter. Gone are all signs of the sniveling, pandering magician – Moebius is cold, focused, and completely in control.]
Moebius: So, Raziel – here we are, finally.
You have no choice but to confront me now – and I am not so foolish as I've let you believe.
We have business to conclude.
Raziel: (enraged)
You knew I would lead the Sarafan to Janos, you vile bastard!
You've been orchestrating my every move!
Moebius: (simply laughs)
Raziel: My destiny is an amusement to you?
Moebius: It was fun, while it lasted.
[Raziel takes a threatening step forward, and Moebius motions to Malek.]
Moebius: I think not, Raziel. Malek, do not let this creature leave. He poses a danger to the Circle.
[Malek steps in front of Moebius, brandishing his pike –]
Moebius: Poor, deluded Raziel... did you somehow imagine you had the guile to change history on me?
I'm the Time-Streamer – I knew your every intention before you did, you imbecile.
[Suddenly, the sounds of a far-off disturbance echo through the chamber. Screams, terrified cries for Malek, and the unmistakable laughter of the vampire Vorador reverberate through the stone corridors.]
Vorador: (in the distance)
Call your dogs – they can feast on your corpses!
[Malek turns instinctively, prepared to defend the Guardians he has sworn to protect – but Moebius calmly raises a hand to restrain him. Malek entreats him –]
Malek: Lord Moebius, there is trouble within. The Circle is under attack –
Moebius: (cold, focused)
Hold fast, Malek.
This one is the real danger to us.
[Raziel backs slowly toward the basin where the Reaver is laid out.]
Raziel: What are you trying to concoct here, Moebius?
Moebius: (hatefully)
You toxic creature – did you imagine I'd simply allow you to run loose, corrupting everything you encounter?
Raziel: I admit that I've underestimated you to this point, Moebius – but it's a mistake I won't repeat.
[With his wraith-blade disabled by the image of Moebius's staff, Raziel has no choice but to take up the Reaver. He grabs the hilt and advances on Moebius and Malek.
This is the moment Moebius was waiting for –]
Moebius: (ominously)
Wrong again, Raziel.
(Moebius and Malek back out of the open doorway.)
Now, Malek – bolt the door!
[Raziel rushes forward, but the portcullis slams down just as he reaches the door.
Turning back toward the chamber, he contemplates the Reaver now clutched in his grasp, and realizes he has no choice but to press forward into the cloister.]
Raziel (V.O.): Using his staff to disable my wraith-blade, Moebius effectively disarmed me, leaving me with only one choice of weapon.
And yet I confess, it was not the lack of options, but blind rage that made me take up the Reaver – in my fury, it felt as though my hand had acted of its own will.
And now that same hand clutched the hilt with unyielding strength – and I felt a constrained tingling, a remote but palpable sense of longing as the disabled wraith-blade tried vainly to embrace its physical twin.

Dialogue: The Sarafan Stronghold[edit | edit source]

[Raziel comments that he cannot put down the Reaver (it won't let him).]
Raziel (V.O.): Now that I had taken it up, the Reaver and I were inescapably joined.
The harder I tried to release the blade, the more tightly my hand gripped the hilt, as if possessed of its own will.
[Raziel comments that he cannot drop to spectral while carrying the Reaver, and he can't summon the wraith-blade, because it's been disabled by Moebius’s staff.]
Raziel (V.O.): The Reaver exerted some mysterious power over me...
It sustained my energy, enabling me to prolong my physical manifestation indefinitely. In fact, bonded to the blade as I was, I could no longer shift into the spirit realm at will.
Nor was I able to summon the Reaver's twin, for my wraith blade had been disabled in the confrontation with Moebius.

Dark Chronicle: Vengeance[edit | edit source]

[As Raziel pursues the Sarafan through the Stronghold, he confronts each of his former brethren in turn, exacting revenge for Janos's murder.
After being ambushed by Moebius and Malek, Raziel proceeds cautiously into the cloister, now armed with the Reaver. Here he encounters Melchiah and Zephon, who have apparently been dispatched to confront him here.]
Zephon: Come to take your revenge, demon?
Melchiah: Back to hell with you!
[Raziel looks upon his former brethren with disgust, relishing his advantage over them.]
Raziel (V.O.): I recognized these two as my former brethren... in life, as Sarafan; and in unlife, as Kain's vampire 'sons'.
Melchiah and Zephon, the weakest of Kain’s brood... These bastards had no idea what future lay in store for them – how they would become the very thing they so despised.
The Reaver hummed with ravenous anticipation – Janos had called it a 'vampiric' blade, endowed with the power to drain its victims of their lifeblood.
I was eager to see what the Reaver would do to these two...
[The battle ensues, and the two Sarafan fall easily before the power of the Reaver. With his former brothers-in-arms lying dead at his feet, Raziel revels in the intoxicating power of the Reaver.]
Raziel (V.O.): As Melchiah and Zephon fell before my blade, I felt the Reaver's blood-thirst as keenly as I ever had when I was still a vampire.
I could sense the boundary between us dissolving – the Reaver was consumed with my rage, and I was intoxicated by its bloodlust.
The blade had a vitalizing effect on me – my physical energy no longer decayed over time, and the wounds inflicted by my foes healed almost instantly.
The Reaver had made me invincible.
[Raziel proceeds into the Stronghold's main Sanctuary, where he discovers Rahab and Dumah waiting for him.]
Dumah: Have you come to reclaim the monster's black heart?
Rahab: You'll have to get through us, first.
[Raziel readies the Reaver eagerly, savoring his newly-discovered role in their ultimate destinies.]
Raziel (V.O.): My former brethren Dumah and Rahab confronted me next – this all seemed so elegantly choreographed.
Exhilarated by the Reaver, I was drunk with revelations...
I could finally appreciate the delicious irony of Kain's blasphemous, private joke – and I reveled as I colluded with him across the centuries.
For it was I who put these bastards in their tomb – thus providing the corpses for Kain to raise as his vampire sons a millennium from now.
[Upon defeating Dumah and Rahab, Raziel proceeds into the choir of the Sanctuary. Here, finally, Raziel is confronted by Turel – his former second-in-command, both as Sarafan and vampire.
Turel advances on Raziel with self-righteous contempt –]
Turel: Get back to the pit you crawled from, demon!
[Raziel regards his former brother-in-arms derisively –]
Raziel (V.O.): And here at last was my brother Turel, who along with Dumah would bear me into the Abyss without questioning Kain's command.
So dutiful and righteous, even as a vampire... I guess some habits die hard.
The vampire Turel had eluded my vengeance; the Sarafan Turel would not.

Background[edit | edit source]

This article or section is written from a real world perspective. Not all, if any, of its content is to be considered a constituent part of the Legacy of Kain canon and universe.

During development the Soul Reaver 2 team specifically intended to avoid the traditional level/boss structure of videogames, instead punctuating the action with what director Andrew Bennett called "epic sequences". This is achieved through most of the game by plot heavy cinematic sequences and puzzle heavy forge areas with specific unlocks gained.[2][3][4][SR2] Blade of Vengeance perhaps comes closest to videogame convention, with the entire chapter essentially being a 'rush' of increasingly challenging enemies, starting with various Demons and building up to pseudo-boss battles against the Sarafan warrior inquisitors, with final encounters with Melchiah and Zephon, Rahab and Dumah, and Turel before facing the final 'boss' in the next chapter.[SR2-C9][SR2-C10][5]

Notably neither Malek nor Rahab is present at the death of Janos. While Malek's absence is perhaps plot-related and understandable with his duties as leading Sarafan and protector of the circle, Rahab's absence was in actuality due to performance issues - as Daniel Cabuco explained:

"Rahab was there.. but we ran into a performance issue with having Raziel, Janos, human Raz, and all the lieutenants on screen at the same time. So we had to cut one.. We picked Rahab at random."

The final sequence of Janos Audron's Retreat, which shows Raziel observing looking down from the balcony holding the Fire Reaver greatly resembles the final window of the Chronoplast visions seen in the Chronoplast in the final chapters of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver.[SR2-C9][SR1-C9] The scene from Soul Reaver was originally intended to depict Raziel with the Amplified Reaver looking down from the Pinnacle of the Silenced Cathedral, having opened the sounding pipes to destroy the Vampires of Kain's empire - these events were ultimately cut from Soul Reaver and included in the Chronoplast sequence as 'visions of a potential future'.[7] Soul Reaver 2 was the first to actively re-integrate the events into the time-stream with the sequence from the end of Janos Audron's retreat actually remodelled to more closely match the scene shown in the Chronplast visions - the original scene is still present in game files and can be observed by re-entering and exiting Janos chambers using Debug menus or other methods.[SR2][SR2-C9][8] Other scenes from the visions would be re-integrated in Legacy of Kain: Defiance.[DEF]

Manipulation of the Debug menu reveals several interesting effects that shed light on the development process:

  • Re-entering the Reaver antechamber repeatedly after triggering the cornered in the stronghold cutscene allows Malek to be fought as a regular enemy, revealing that he does have a form of combat AI, despite being seen only in a single cutscene (by comparison, Moebius does not). Presumably this is due to Malek being at least partially copied from the other inquisitors.[SR2][SR2-C9]
  • Following on from this, the other inquisitors can also be fought without the use of the Reaver and its healing powers. The battles with the inquisitors are the only place where Pikes can be seen in game, and they can only be retrieved if Raziel is not armed with the Reaver. Their listing as a weapon type in the Prima guide and the naming of the Vampire hunter pikemen and Sarafan warrior pikemen perhaps suggests the weapon was originally intended to be seen more often in the title before its usage was restricted to the inquisitors.[SR2][SR2-C9][1]
  • It is also possible to shift to Spectral Realm using debug menus or other tricks - which is not usually possible in the Sarafan Stronghold sequences because of Raziel's possession of the Reaver - this reveals that the spectral realm is notably quieter, with fewer Planar portals, virtually no spectral enemies and less spectral terrain morphing - arguably this is due to its inaccessibility in the course of the regular game, rendering such additions unnecessary.[SR2][SR2-C9]

Janos's private chambers
  • Soul Reaver 2 is not formally divided into chapters or levels in-game.[SR2] The chapter names and definitions used at the Legacy of Kain Wiki originate from the supplementary Prima Guide, Prima's Official Strategy Guide - Soul Reaver 2[1]
  • The dialogue transcripts used in this article are, wherever possible, adapted directly from the Dark Chronicle summary transcripts available in game. Scenes not included in the Dark Chronicle feature are instead adapted from Tenaya's transcript of Soul Reaver 2 at Nosgothic Realm - itself derived from the Dark Chronicle and an official game script provided by Crystal Dynamics' Kyle Mannerberg.[SR2][9]
  • The interior of Janos's private chambers is only shown in cutscenes and cannot be visited in normal gameplay, however it is possible to explore using fly codes or hacked savegames. This reveals the chamber as much more 'homely' and 'warmer' than the surrounding areas with none of the ice seen in other areas. Interesting features included an open fireplace and chimney with an unusual depiction of a bearded figure above the mantelpiece, a balcony above the external lake, several Reaver icons (and the Reaver itself), two busts of Janos and a large basin filled with Blood flanked by two sculptures resembling goats.[SR2][SR2-C8][SR2-C9][10]

The unique souls of the inquisitors
  • In Vampire Interview, Janos commented that the Reaver was "infused... with vampiric energy, empowering the Reaver to drain our enemies of their precious lifeblood" - it can be observed doing just that do the Sarafan warrior inquisitors, however perhaps tellingly it does not consume their souls. The souls of the inquisitors are notably unique among those of the game, appearing as blue spheres. Even with the aid of debug menu effects, they cannot be consumed or seen in the Spectral Realm as they quickly rise away - presumably due to their 'destiny' to be resurrected as Kain's lieutenants.[SR2-C8][SR2-C9][SR1-C7]
