Bloodstone bridges were a set of magically summoned walkways used by Raziel in the puzzle to ascend Janos Audron's Retreat in Soul Reaver 2.

Role[edit | edit source]

Bloodstone Bridges were crucial to solving the puzzle inside the inner sanctum of Janos Audron's Retreat and ascending to Janos's chamber in Soul Reaver 2.[SR2]

When Raziel first entered the lower levels of the retreat, he found a basin filled with Blood and an empty chalice nearby on a small pedestal. Clearing the chamber of its hazards, Raziel was able to fill the chalice from the basin and move up to a higher level, where he poured the contents into a second empty basin, marked by several Ancient runes surrounding it on the floor and an illuminated lamp. Once activated in this manner, a 'sheet' of blood would appear between the runes and the intended destination, which quickly clotted and darkened - solidifying into a black and red bridge or ramp structure that allowed Raziel to climb higher up the retreat.[SR2][1]

Raziel would activate several Bloodstone bridges in the inner sanctum of the retreat, finally allowing him to reach the top level of the aerie and Janos's chambers.[SR2] It was ultimately implied however, that by activating the Bloodstone bridges, Raziel had unwittingly provided the Sarafan warrior inquisitors with a method to ascend the retreat themselves and to reach their greatest enemy.[SR2-C9]

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • Bloodstone bridges are not named in game, but they are referred to as such in the Prima Guide, along with a variety of other similar terms, including "blood-stone ramp" "bloodstone staircase" and "bloodstone stairs".[1]
  • Similar textures to the completed Bloodstone bridges are used throughout the interior of Janos Audron's Retreat and in several other vampire constructions throughout Soul Reaver 2, though it is unclear if these are created from Blood in the same manner as the bloodstone bridges.[SR2]
  • Empty basins were marked with blue colored Runic symbols, which turned red when the associated bloodstone bridge was activated. The lamp above the basin would also move to indicate the next empty basin at this point.[SR2]
  • The usage of blood in the construction of the bloodstone bridges is interesting as their presumed architects, the Ancient vampires, were effected by the Blood curse and had to actively feed on the blood to survive. The bridges are likely to be symbolic of this vampire nature.
