Nachtholm Cove is an inland body of water seen in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. The cove notably contains the town of Nachtholm on a series of islands and bridges.

Profile[]

Nachholm cove is an isolated body of water that is found in mid-west Nosgoth, just north of the Pillars. The cove has a number of islands in the middle where the town of Nachtholm is built with a system of wooden bridges aiding passage across.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/3]

The cove appears in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain where it is visited by Kain in the chapter "Nupraptor" as Kain made his way from the Pillars of Nosgoth to Nupraptor's Retreat. After leaving the pillars and passing the Light Dungeon, Wolf Form Dungeon, Lake of Tears and the Energy Bolt Dungeon, the main path would lead northward to the cove which was hemmed in by cliffs on all sides.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/3]

The environs around the area contained the first blood fountain for strength as well as several notable secrets - including the "Brigands Base" and Teleporters leading to the the two megalith circles. Most notably was the town of Nachtholm which was found on a series of islands across the cove - whose bridges allowed Kain to cross the cove and reach the other side and the path leading onwards to Steinchencröe.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/3][1][Blood Omen strategy guide]

Behind the scenes[]

Nachtholm Cove and the village are encountered much earlier in the alpha than they are in the final version of the game, where Nachtholm is the first town that can be entered after Kain leaves Ziegsturhl. Rather than being isolated, the cove is actually part of a larger body of water in the expanded Lake of Tears and makes up its eastern edge. Instead of being reached from the southern trail, the town is reached from a trail in the west and the cove extends further south than the retail version - covering where the retails entrance path would be.[2][3]

None of the secrets that exist in the final version of the map can be entered map, with the cave entrances in the south and north not being connected to anywhere and the interiors and megalith circles not actually being present in that version of the game. The eastern cave is not present at all and a number of features - including a vista point and a river heading off screen - appear to suggest the area may have been intended to link to Vorador's Mansion and the Termogent Forest. The 'Brigands Base' found in the eastern cave is actually found in a cave nearby the pillars in the alpha version.[2][3]
